Electric vehicles to be exempt from national road tolls

RTÉ’s Prime Time has learned that the government is considering exempting electric vehicles from tolls on all national roads.

The Department of Transport Tourism and Sport is promoting the initiative and has also proposed special grants to taxi drivers to replace diesel and petrol vehicles with electric cars and vans.

The proposals have been made to the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform for Budget 2018.

The costs of these two schemes are not known.

Plans are also advanced to introduce a public “borrow-an-electric-car” scheme in the capital, along the lines of the Dublin Bikes initiative.

The scheme is expected to begin next year.
