Rescue teams are working to release a whale caught in shark nets off Currumbin, on the Gold Coast.

The light-coloured minke whale is tangled just metres below the surface and is able to breathe.

It is the second whale to be caught in Gold Coast shark nets in less than a month.

A six-to-nine-metre humpback had to be cut free in waters off Broadbeach on June 27.

Meanwhile, four days ago ropes and buoys were cut from the tail of a humpback off South Stradbroke Island.
