Kurtis Patterson and Jhye Richardson will make their Test debuts for Australia against Sri Lanka, but young gun Will Pucovski has missed out on a breakthrough selection.

The team was released late on Wednesday ahead of the start of the day/night Test at the Gabba on Thursday afternoon.

Patterson earned his way into the side after his strong performance for the Cricket Australia XI against Sri Lanka in Hobart.

The NSW batsman, facing the pink ball, had unbeaten knocks of 157 and 102 against the tourists to raise selectors’ interest.

Pucovski was tipped to make his way into the team, but the Australian middle order will have Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne.

The opening partnership will be Joe Burns — returning to the side — alongside Marcus Harris, meaning Matt Renshaw misses out.

West Australian paceman Richardson comes into the side to replace Josh Hazlewood, after he was ruled out of the series this week with a back injury.

Richardson will join Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon in the Australian attack.

Team: Marcus Harris, Joe Burns, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head, Kurtis Patterson, Tim Paine (C), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Jhye Richardson, Nathan Lyon. Peter Siddle (12th man).
